One who is the object of great attention and devotion
I wanted to take a portrait of a true icon, a real stand up person, and I struggled with the context of what an icon is. Above I have stated the definition of icon as a reference, but each of us has our own interpretation. What makes one an icon? Fame? Money? Power? Position? At the end of the day it is truly about what we have done with the time God has given us.
Al McMaster is a true icon in my mind. A true gentleman, a good soul and a vision of what it means to be a volunteer and work with youth. Al, affectionately called Skip, will in January have been a Scouter for 55 years. He has worked with and shared his experiences with youth for decades, giving more than a lifetime of service to young people, longer than most of us spend in our careers. Al has been awarded the highest of volunteer awards that Scouts Canada offers, and now well in to his eighties he is still attending meetings and camps with young people.
An icon? I say – yes.
